چکیده
The Oneota who lived in large farming communities in the La Crosse locality from apPl"()~im(itely A.D. 1300 to 1625 are recognized by the characteristic ceramics tl1e¥ pfodllced. They manufactured shell-tempered ceramic vessels. that were much larger(indmore finely made than the grit-:-tempered pottery of the Woodland culturesthat inhabited Wisconsin prior to A.D. 1300. The use of shell· to decrease the porosity, improve the thermal efficiency and increase the durability of the resulting pottery presents a special problem. Under certain conditions when the calcium carbonate inthe shellis heated its chemical composition changes to a more unstable fonn known as calcium oxide. Calcium oxide is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the atmosphere. The absol"Ption of moisture by the calcium oxide causesfired pottery to crack and spall, weakening the strength of the pot and often causing it to crumble. Some attempts have been made to replicate the prehistoric pottery·found in the La Crosse area yet more experimentation is needed to under~··~~~··~·~rarn:ttt1trt~chniques and materials used to produce ceramics with properties similar to those of Oneota pottery. The replicas produced thus far were fired in the controlled environment of a kiln and do not exhibit the same properties as Oneota pottery and attempts to temper the clay with shell have met with spotty success. This research focuses on the problems associated with shell tempered ceramics through the production and testing of clay tiles made from local raw materials and firedllsil1g opel1-a.iffiril1g techniques and the comparison of these tiles with actual Oneota pottery sherds.

The Zeytoon clay deposit is located 30 Km northeast of Abadeh at Fars province. In this study, investigated physical, chemical, mineralogical and firing characteristics to evaluate their potential suitability as raw materials in various ceramic applications. Physical properties were identified by consistency limits and cation exchange capcity (CEC). Chemical and mineralogical properties were ca...

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the production feasibility of triaxial whiteware using sand from cast iron moulds as a raw material instead of silica, and recycled glass in place of feldspar. Formulations were prepared using sand, glass waste, and white-firing clay such that only 50% of the composition was virgin material (clay). The ceramic bodies were formed by pressing and fired at...

The Spanish ceramic tile manufacturing sector (which also refers to raw material suppliers and producers of bodies, glazes, frits, engobes and pigments) is facing a most singular moment in its history. First of all, it needs to overcome the economic downturn that started in 2008 before going on to deal with the fierce competition from other countries emerging as competitive producers in the pos...

The sugarcane industry generates huge amounts of sugarcane bagasse ashes (SCBA). This work investigates the incorporation of a SCBA waste as an alternative raw material into a clay body, replacing natural clay material by up to 20 wt.%. Clay ceramic pieces were produced by uniaxial pressing and fired at temperatures varying from 700 to 1100 oC. The technological properties of the clay ceramic p...

Mineralogical, textural and chemical analyses of clay-rich materials following firing, evidence that initial mineralogical differences between two raw materials (one with carbonates and the other without) influence the textural and mineralogical evolution of the ceramics as T increases from 700 to 1100°C. Mineralogical and textural changes are interpreted considering local marked disequilibria ...
